John and Judy in Kingswood near the Blue Mountains made me feel at home in their house. The food Judy prepared was always phenomenal and together with John I got some book shelfes up and explained him some stuff on the computer. Judy is still working to produce pet and animal vaccinations whereas John is working a lot at his big house and gets “borrowed” from the neighbours from time to time :-)

On 28th not all things were done but my flight would leave at 19:40 in the evening, so I was quite in a hurry to clean my bike, get a packet to the post and so on. Then I jumped in the train with my bike and went without problems to the International Airport.

A bike box, that’s what I needed. So I went to the VirginBlue office, asked them. I should wait until the check-in opens and then I woudl get my box.

On the homepage they say the box was 15 $ (Australia), but they and I forgot and so I didn’t pay anything extra, great! On the Sydney Airport I met Paul and Anne from New Zealand, they also had to wait for the same flight; they were very friendly and later even invited me to stay in their place in Christchurch.

The bike was disassembled (wheels and saddle) in no time and I had a good flight (with quite some turbulences). In Christchurch I met Ashley, another friendly Kiwi, right at the airport after I had put together the bike again. He also invited me to stay at his place for the night - Kiwis, you are so hospitable, easy going and relaxed! Thank you!

But I waited for Danny, my CouchSurfing host, who picked me up from the airport in the middle of the night!

With Danny and Shaine and their friends I spent the last 3 days eating pizza, planing my trip through New Zealand and just having a wonderful time!

Yesterday evening we had a small party with movies, a lot to eat (especially if you have a sweet tooth) and photo shooting over hours - nice! A big THANK YOU to these nice CouchSurfing hosts.

After a big big breakfast I was full of energy and started strong on the Hume Highway. Within half an hour I found more than 3$ on the road - the people in this area seem to not like money, nice!

I met two racing cyclists who approached fast from behind and all three of us had the winds on our side.

Goulborne Merino

In Goulburn I went to the Big Merino, a 15 meter high sheep, empty inside representing the wool industry in this area, and later had a look into the Green Grocer cafe + bicycle shop - a funny combination.

Afterwards the Hume Highway went through big forests and on big big bridges over deep valleys, sometimes in a stunning scenery.

Hume Highway - going through the mountains

In the evening I slept just 10m from the highway behind a few bushes.

The morning that followed was a real surprise: 500 to 600m downhill over 30km with nice tailwinds made it a pleasure to ride, totally easy.

The highway always stayed in a secure distance to every town and I therefore had to stop in a “fool” station to refill my bottles and drinking backpack.

I crossed the Nepean river several times and reached the Sydney suburbia pretty soon, fighting my way through Liverpool to Smithfield and Paramatta, back to Isa and Alfreds unit in Northmead.Veggie market in Liverpool

A friendly Italian veggie shop owner together with his mother gave me 2 pears and a banana, especially what I needed for the last 20km city traffic cycling.

In the afternoon I met two French in Northmead Market - I had found their mobile phone on the highway and returned it to them. They were really friendly young people and absolutely happy about getting the information stored on the SIM card back.

Isa doing hoola hoop ...

And in the evening we went out to Miriam’s place, a house close to the bush, to celebrate her birthday together with friends from many countries. A really interesting mix of people with different backgrounds, some artists, amateur actors … and when we came back I was happy but tired!

I wanted to post the last posting on 22nd in the morning. But the laptop was gone, Vlad had to use it for work. Had I had the laptop at that time, well, I guess I wouldn´t have left Canberra that day, as I am addicted!

So after 3 relaxing days, a lot of eating, after getting rid off the grass growing on my head and funny times with Vlad, my great CouchSurfing host in Canberra I was on the road again, but only for a few days.

lost some hair? half-skinny head

I went around the Canberra city center and straight onto the Federal Highway which changed its name to Hume Highway sometime later. Plenty of hills but broad shoulders during the first 20 or 30km.

And then this vast river bed in front of me - at least that’s what I thought it was. A long downhill and the road followed this empty grazing land to my right for many kilometers. I’ve been told later on that it was “George”, who lost his first name “Lake” during the last 6 to 7 years of drought! In my map it was still a big big lake, but I couldn’t make out a single drop of water! Climate Change is upon us and the Australian farmers in here in the area can tell you a story about it!

(Former) Lake George

Collector, a small village with a supermarket closing at 5pm, welcomed me at 5:23pm. No bread, not even from the nice and cozy small pub where the Ozzies were watching … were watching … of course, they were watching cricket!

Cricket in Australian Pub (Collector)

“I’ll leave this village”, the decision was made but then I found a BMX gang on a dirt parcours next to the road. The boys were jumping and sometimes it seemed as if they didn’t want to come back to earth! Impressive! And dangerous - I should have photographed their legs, arms and shoulders!

Bradley before the stunt, still alive

14 year old Bradley went over the new, even steeper and higher ramp first in an impressive jump that he landed like a professional! You rock!

The father of Bradley, Gary, came and brought me a beer - wow, Australia mate! And then I got invited to stay for the night on the couch that was built up faster than I could say “yes”. Thank you a lot!

Friendly hosts in Collector: Bradley, Felicity, Jen and Gary

Bradley has this new and fancy iPod touch, the one without buttons, and we were browsing his music library in the evening. Nice device!

The family told me about the droughts in the area, that the locals renamed “Lake George” to “George” (have a look below this posting in the map!) and about the problems the farmers and especially the wool farmers face and about a Swedish camera team which had been filming in the area about the topic.

”Der Berg ruft!” (German for “The mountain calls (for) you!”. And one thing is for sure: if there is one hill that should be called mountain (Berg) then its Kosciuszko (even though it has a strange name), with 2228m the highest peak on the continent Australia (but not in the country of Australia). So how could I resist as a passionate mountaineer?

In the morning I therefor went to Jindabyne, stocking food and water, cruising a bit on my bike through the city, controlling whether the internet access here is Australian standard (yes it is with really strange and high prices). Never had I expected to find that many ski and snowboard shops in a Australian town of that size (but on the other hand I´ve found many things here that were not the way I thought they would be, e.g. the weather, the traffic). The panorama view on the lake and the surrounding alpine environment is another plus for this place!

Outlook on Lake Jindabyne

Gap on the way up to Charlotte Pass in Mt. Kosciusko National Park

I left Jinda at 1pm very late, and even before the long uphill started stopped again to talk with 3 French in their camper bus. They had just finished eating otherwise I could have surely had some good good food again (as one of them had just finished studying cooking!) - typical when I meet French, I love it! And the other thing I really love is cycling uphill; no, no joke! I love to cycle in the European Alps where you can basically go uphill all day long - it brings me in a state of trance, just like the Buddha. From the 900m high Jindabyne it´s a relative difference in altitude of 1328m and in between there are 3 or 4 gaps where you descend 100 altimeters each. That´s why I ended up having 1622 altimeters even though I couldn´t take my bike up to the summit.

High Plateau before Charlotte Pass in Mt Kosciusko National Park

DSC05813

To get the previous image I had to first change the batteries, then cut some of the movies I had taken to get more storage on the memory card and take a second try because in the first I didn´t realize that ther was no space left on the camera - you see what I´m going through to bring the pictures to my readers  … but no, I don´t want a martyr crown for that! Beginning from Charlottes Pass there were no motorized vehicles allowed anymore and the so far really brilliant road got a dirt trail that was still perfect for the bike.

Just after the 2000m mark I passed Seamans hut and went then on to the highest public toilet in Australia (on Rawsons pass (I think)). From there on I had to walk as bikes were prohibited on the iron grid way up to the summit (probably to minimize human caused erosion). And on the 9km since Charlotte Pass I had only met a group of 4 men, so it was pretty empty.

I jogged the remaining 1.5km to the peak and met 2 young French which were just leaving as I arrived. They only had short T-Shirts and nothing to change and still 9km back to Charlotte Pass while I was already looking forward to my Windstopper Paclite jacket as the temperatures cooled down and there was a fresh wind blowing.

As soon as I was alone I started taking a 360° panorama (of which maybe 60° were not sharp enough, so I left them out when stitching later on). I enjoyed the loneliness and absolutely stunning view and atmosphere for some more minutes before jogging down to my parked bike again.

Mt. Kosciusko summit panorama (nearly 300 degrees)

And as the mountains were calling for me now they didn´t let me go, they kept me tied! It was just that beautiful that I decided not to go down to Jindabyne but stay near or in Seamans Hut. I was really happy, happy to jump!

In the hut I put my story into the log/guestbook and had a nice and absolutely quiet evening in this comfy small hut.

Tea, bananas, ginger beer (non alcoholic) and pouched egss on toast! What a delight, what a luxury! Thanks a lot to my friendly hosts Bob and wife in the morning - the energy from this brilliant breakie pushed me up the mountains later on!

300 altimeters uphill mostly on dirt road were next. Many turns and a increasingly better view on the nice forest covered mountains with every altimeter up nearly made me forget about the hard physical work I was doing. The downhill that followed was even better - all on red dirt road and with interesting “snakes” on the road (see picture).

For 10 to 20km it was quite flat (always 10 - 50 altimeters up, then down again) while cycling along a river, probably the Snowy River. The uphill that followed took me like an elevator from 200m altitude to above 1000m. But I shall not let out what I learned in between:

Big bush fires in the years 2002/2003 burnt nearly the whole area and there were many dead trees everywhere. But flora and fauna have recovered, biological experts haven´t found a decrease in biodiversity and compared to the pictures I´ve seen on signs at a lookout on 800m altitude showed a breathtaking difference in the view between 2003 and 2008 - now it´s green again, mostly. Back then it was black and grey, dead!

Rocks, dead trees and a great view on the forest of Mt. Kosciusko National Park

Mountainbike with outlook on Mt Kosciusko National Park

After I´ve reached the top I continued on a 1000m plateau over many hills and with nice tailwinds into the direction of Jindabyne, but didn´t go into town in the evening and pitched up the tent 5km outside instead. Loud music from a nearby farm was exactly my taste and so I had luxury in the evening again - a good end for a cycling day!
