I woke up in the morning because of a strange noise: a young dog had found my food next to the bike and was playing with the bread. I played with it for a while and started cycling then. My goal was Brindisi in 2 days - about 380km mostly flat. The tour today was hilly tou mountaineous for the first 80km - then it got flat, really flat.

many small villages built on mountainssee the flat land on the horizon! have been waiting for that for hours

After about 40km in the flat I had gone around Foggia. It started to rain and I had to stay at a fuel station for about an hour.

 rain again, near Foggia

I then continued to a small city about 10 to 15 km from Foggia where locals warned me because on the way to Brindisi there would be much violence and many criminals (Mafia) - maybe they only wanted to scare me a bit.

I continued to cycle into the night and found a dry place in a flooded area in a train station - but there were so many mosquitos that I left at 2:30am and cycled another 120km until I arrived in Bari in the morning at 9am or so. So the total distance in 24 hours was about 282km with about 1300 meters in altitude.

I found a ferry company and bought a ticket to Igoumenitsa, Greece for a ferry which left at 5pm. I got on the ferry at 2:30pm, found a shower where I cleaned not only me but also my waterproof bags and my clothes. On the ferry I met people from the USA, Greece and Germany.

I put my cloth that hadn’t dried completely yesterday evening on a stand and put it into the sun. If I had wanted to stay longer I shouldn’t have done that - the owner of the building lives with his parents in an older builing only a few meters away. Seeing cloths hanging in the sun he came together with his father and wanted me to leave, repeating his “mia, mia” again and again. I only said “mama mia” as if I didn’t understand and set myself a 5 minute limit :-)

From the woman of a small supermercato I got some special local food and some cheese for free after buying some musli and latte (milk) - I could also use the bath.

In the noon I came to a electronics shop where I hoped to get a box for 4 micro batteries to charge but I didn’t. But I got internet access to upload pictures and also water and food for the lunch.

When I took some orange fruits from a tree I had a new favorite fruit immediately after the first bite - don’t know the name though.

In the afternoon and evening I took 2 passes the second with over 700 meters of altitude so that I have about 1200 meters in altitude today at 116km with an average of 18,2 km/h.

I hope to leave the mountains behind me tomorrow for two stages in the flat to Brindisi.

Right now I am sleeping on straw balls under a bridge because it has started to rain and flashes enlighten the sky from time to time.

After a beautiful night with a  stunning view on Rome I left the hills of Tusculum and went inwards Italy into the direction  of  Brindisi.

On the SS6 street there was rush hour - fortunately in the opposite direction.I have  noticed a  phenomenon  that   started just south of Rome: Drivers honking before they overtake you. I interpret this as a warning not  only for me but also for the drivers going into the opposite direction. Then in the morning I was lucky to fiind a store for mobiles where they had a PDA and a PC to install my Bluetooth Smart Keyboard software on and after this  transfer  it per SD card to my PDA.The weather was quite hot and foggy so that cycling was quite difficult and I couldn’t see too much of the wonderful mountain panorama you normally have in this area - sounds quite familiar (remember my report of the Pyrenees?).

In the afternoon it  started to rain again and  I  was lucky to find a fuel station with electrical energy and water. While I was eating my 1kg melon the clouds ate the mountains. I’ve then been washing and drying some of my clothes  during the last two hours - last time they got washed in a not natural way  was in Orleans :-)

It’s 10pm now and I’ve found a villa which is being built. A great panorama view!

because of enduring technical problems I`m trying a new format: download audio-report, Marseille to Pisa and the last 3 days.
Upload didn´t work - will try to find an internet cafe. won´t go to Rome becauuse haven´t found a host

Update: Have found an internet cafe now - just click the files to get the reports (in bad quality, though) - you have to adjust the volume to understand it.

Look at my flickr account to see the latest photos with small comments (as topic)
